On January 20 2018, terrorists stormed the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul and opened fire at guests. Six people were killed and many were taken hostage in the attack that was claimed by the Taliban.
This is yet another attack on a major hotel and in the past we have seen similar attacks. India witnessed one of the worst attacks on hotels when the Lashkar-e-Tayiba struck at the Taj Mahal Hotel and Trident at Mumbai on 26/11/
Here is a list of major attacks on Hotels across the world: Burkina Faso: On January 15 2016, 30 people were killed after terrorists struck at the Splendid hotel and a restaurant in Ouagadougou. The attack that lasted 12 hours and was claimed by the al-Qaeda.
Afghanistan: On August 1 2016, a bomb-laden truck was driven into the Northgate hotel in Kabul. One police man was killed. On January 4 2008, terrorists targeted the Serena hotel in the heart of Kabul in which seven persons died. On March 20, 2014, a Taliban squad hit the same hotel, leaving nine dead.
Ivory Coast: On March 13 2016, 19 people were killed when terrorists of al-Qaeda’s North African affiliate, Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) struck at the resort of Grand-Bassam.
Mali: On November 20, 2015, a siege at the luxury Radisson Blu hotel in Mali’s capital Bamako left 20 people dead. Al-Murabitoun claimed the attack.
Tunisia: 38 people were killed on June 26 2016 when a student went on a shooting spree at Sousse in the northeast of Tunisia. The Islamic State claimed the attack.
Libya: The ISIS claimed a January 27, 2015 attack on Tripoli’s luxury Corinthia hotel. Nine people including five foreigners were killed in the attack.
Jakarta: On July 17, 2009, nine people died in a double suicide bombing targeting the luxury Ritz-Carlton and Marriott hotels in Jakarta
Mumbai 26/11: 166 people died in a coordinated strike carried out by the Lashkar-e-Tayiba in Mumbai. Terrorists targeted the Taj Mahal hotel, Trident, Nariman House and a railway station.
Islamabad: On September 20, 2008, a truck driven by a suicide bomber and loaded with 600 kilos of explosives drove into the Marriott hotel in Islamabad. 60 people include the Czech ambassador were killed in the strike.
